Elsa M. van der Laaken grew up in The Hague, Holland during the Nazi occupation of 1940-1945. She described her family’s situation and defiance during the war years in her book “A Point of Reference,” published in 2002. “1960 – Destination Israel” portrays the period of the writer’s life when she decided to leave home and explore the world. After WW II Elsa studied chemistry and worked in this field when she traveled to Israel. The chronological accounts of her work and adventures in the new country show the passage of a young woman into adulthood during the sixties. The writer’s life changed after her marriage and the birth of her three children. Her husband’s profession took the family to various countries and she decided to concentrate on “Teaching English as a Second Language.” She taught English to children and adults in Brazil for many years and moved to California after studying psychology and creative writing at Vermont College. Elsa still lives in California, where she teaches English to immigrants. Contact the Author Elsa M. van der Laaken |
